The intellectual property protection system in Armenia was established in January 1992 under the Government of the Republic of Armenia. In July 2021, the agency was officially renamed the Armenian Intellectual Property Office and currently operates under the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia. The Office is responsible for administering intellectual property rights and plays a key role in strengthening the country’s legal framework to support innovation, creativity, and economic growth.
The trademark registration before the Intellectual Property Office of Armenia can be filed either through the online portal or via offline mode.
Multi-class applications are allowed by the Intellectual Property Office of Armenia.
The requirements for filing a trademark application are as follows:
*If priority is being claimed, a Certified Priority Document in Chinese must be submitted within three months of filing;
*A copy of the signed power of attorney is required to be submitted.
The official language for trademark proceedings in the Armenia is Armenian.
The trademark registration process in Armenia begins with the submission of application before the Intellectual Property Office. Once the TM application is filed, it undergoes a preliminary examination within two months after submission of the application to ensure it meets all the filing requirements. Following this, the application is published for a two-month opposition period in the Official Bulletin of Industrial Property and also the substantive examination is conducted within three months from the date of publication to examine the application based on absolute grounds for refusal. If any discrepancies arise during the examination, then the Armenian IP Office will issue a provisional refusal, and the applicant will be given two months of time period to submit an appeal or response to the office action/provisional refusal. If no objections are raised and no opposition is filed, the trademark will be proceeds for registration, and upon payment of the prescribed registration fee, a certificate of registration is issued.
The opposition proceedings commence when an opponent files a notice of opposition within the stipulated period of two months from the date of publication. The AIPO will notifies the applicant within five days after the receipt of opposition notice. The applicant has to submit a response and observations to oppositions within one month from the date of AIPO’s notification. Thereafter, AIPO will examines submissions of both parties and makes a decision either to dismiss the opposition or reject the application, in whole or in part.

A trademark registration in Armenia is valid for a period of ten years. The trademark must be renewed within six months before the expiry of trademark registration.
A registered trademark must be actively used within five years of its registration. If the trademark is not used continuously during this period, it may be subject to cancellation following a request from a third party.
The trademark registration in Armenia normally takes between five to seven months in straightforward applications.
According to 2024 statistics from the World Intellectual Property Organization, trademark filings in Armenia increased by 25.5%, indicating a notable rise in interest in intellectual property protection. In recent years, WIPO has also supported Armenia by organizing seminars and awareness programs to highlight the importance of IP protection and by assisting with projects aimed at strengthening the country’s intellectual property sector. This growing focus on IP has also been reflected in the increased use of the Madrid System, with international trademark applications designating Armenia rising by 8.5%. Armenia’s progress is further demonstrated in the Global Innovation Index, where the country improved its ranking from 63rd place in 2024 to 59th place in 2025, signalling continued growth in innovation capacity and technological development.
