Indonesia among the most IP applications, says WIPO

According to the Law and Human Rights Ministry, Indonesia is one of the top ten developing countries with the most intellectual property (IP) applications on the World Intellectual Property Organization's list (WIPO).

"This success is the result of the diligent effort of all stakeholders in expanding the number of applications for intellectual property in Indonesia," Razilu, the acting director general for IP at the ministry, said in a statement.

He also mentioned that Indonesia is one of the top ten middle-income countries in terms of trademark registrations.

According to WIPO's 2021 annual report, which was published at the end of 2022, Indonesia ranked second overall in terms of the number of trademark applications with 127,142 registrations. Mexico, on the other hand, took the top spot with 199,389 registrations.

Thailand had 4,009 registrations, Turkey had 4,490 registrations, Ukraine had 4,425 registrations, South Korea had 4,009 registrations, Germany had 10,576 registrations, Russia had 9,079 registrations, Australia had 7,844 registrations, Turkey had 4,490 registrations, and Japan had 5,238 registrations (3,762 registrations).

According to Razilu, his party has developed a number of digital-based innovations for simple, low-cost, and open IP registration methods in order to meet the demand for applications and strengthen domestic IP protection.

His party, for example, introduced automated approval for trademark application (POP Merek) and automatic approval for copyright registration (POP HC) services in 2022.

"We are working to deliver a variety of cutting-edge and ground-breaking digital services," he said.
