The Syrian Arab Republic has been a member of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property since September 01, 1924, and joined the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) on June 26, 2003, reflecting its longstanding commitment to international intellectual property frameworks. 

DEADLINE TO FILE PATENT APPLICATION IN SYRIA

In Syria, the national phase of an international (PCT) application must be entered within 31 months from the priority date. 

LANGUAGE TO FILE PATENT APPLICATION IN SYRIA

The application is filed in Syria in English and Arabic. The Arabic translation can be submitted within three months from the filing date. However, the English specification or translation must be submitted at the time of national phase entry. 

EXTENSION FOR FILING LATE PATENT APPLICATION IN SYRIA

In Syria, a reinstatement of the application under certain conditions is allowed, such as demonstrating that the late filing was unintentional and that due care was exercised.  

REQUIREMENTS FOR FILING PATENT APPLICATION IN SYRIA

The documents required to file the national phase application in the said country are as follows:

  • Power of attorney: The original Power of Attorney, duly notarized and legalized up to the Syrian consulate must be submitted to the Patent Office within 2 months from the date of filing of Syrian application. 

  • Deed of Assignment: The original Deed of Assignment, duly notarized and legalized up to the Syrian consulate must be submitted to the Patent Office within 2 months from the date of filing of Syrian application. 

COST EXEMPTION AVAILABLITY FOR PATENT APPLICATION IN SYRIA

There is no cost exemption available for patent application in Syria. 

FILING REQUEST FOR EXAMINATION PATENT APPLICATION IN SYRIA

The substantive examination begins automatically after filing. No separate request for examination is needed in Syria.  

PAYING RENEWAL FEE FOR PATENT APPLICATION IN SYRIA

In Syria, annual renewal fees must be paid prior to each anniversary of the patent application's filing date to ensure its renewal. 

PATENT TERM

In Syria, a patent remains valid for 20 years from the date of the international filing.
